2nd 9 weeks assignment 13

14. Go into your blog and copy one photo from YOUR “portraits” assignment. Give an honest
critique of that photo. Are you happy with it? If so, what do you like? If not, what would you
change? Is there anything you could improve upon?

This is my photo for portraits, I like it a lot, but I feel like I should have dodged and burned some of the distracting elements in the background of the image.

2nd 9 weeks assignment 12

13. Search the internet and find 10 different portrait. Write a short statement as to why you were
attracted to each photo.

I selected this image because I thought it was pretty creative, it has a one color, which obviously attracts the eye, and it really helps the photograph work.

This photo has nice shapes, like the ones across her face by the shadows on the fan.

This photo has a very specific center of interest, which I think is the girls eyes. Also It is shot from above to give her a more feminine look (maybe).

This photograph has very strong eyes, and also it has an interesting pattern because of the freckles.

This photo has a more muted/vintage color scheme, and uses lighting to create shapes and add interest to the subjects face.

I chose this photo because it was a bit different than the others, the rain and the lighting adds some drama to the picture, and adds some contrast as well.

This photo was also taken in the rain, but some sort of light is used and he looks like he is in space, it has a sort of A symmetrical balance to it, which works because of the colors used in the lights,

This photo uses a very bronze color scheme, and she is looking out of the frame and is not centered.

This photo uses texture and lines to make the image more interesting.

This portrait has very strong eyes, and It works because the colors in the eyes are almost identical to the colors on the necklace.

2nd 9 weeks journal 11

11. What makes a great portrait? There is no one right answer to this, but you will certainly have a
few ideas of an approach that is right for you.

I think that a great portrait is probably a candid one, or one that is taken without the subject being fully aware of the photographers presence.  Sometimes portraits with the subject looking at the camera can be powerful, however most of the time it looks really fake, like, no one is that happy.  A great portrait is a combination of lighting, facial expression, and body position.

2nd 9 weeks journal 6

6. Go into your blog and copy one photo from YOUR “hands and feet” assignment. Give an honest
critique of that photo. Are you happy with it? If so, what do you like? If not, what would you
change? Is there anything you could improve upon?

This is my hands and feet, but i chose to do paws, I like this photo and I think it works because his body not being centered and the paw prints causing repetition on the concrete.

2nd 9 weeks Journal assignment 4

4. Go into your blog and copy one photo from YOUR “rule of thirds” assignment. Give an honest
critique of that photo. Are you happy with it? If so, what do you like? If not, what would you
change? Is there anything you could improve upon?

I would have maybe shot this on  a sunnier day. Im pretty content with this photograph because it utilizes the rule of thirds in 2 areas of this photo.

2nd 9 weeks assignment 5

5. Search the internet and find 5 photos that utilize “hands and feet” in different ways. Write a
short statement as to why you were attracted to each photo.

This image attracted me because of its use of contrasting values and dramatic lighting.

this image uses proportion and texture to convey the size and age of the hands.

this image shows texture and proportion in order to create a more interesting subject matter, even without the faces of the subjects.

this picture has some texture in the sand and shows little feet with a shallow depth of field and some shadows that add interest.

This photo utilizes proportion and value to create subject material.

2nd 9 weeks journal 3

3. Search the internet and find 5 photos that utilize “rule of thirds” in different ways. Write a short
statement as to why you were attracted to each photo

I chose this image because It utilizes the rule of thirds and It sort of contains a story within the image. Also it is in black and white so it is automatically deep and meaningful.

I chose this image because it really captures your attention with the textured sky and use of the rule of thirds on the horizon line.

I chose this image because it uses a warm color scheme which really attracts the eye to the image and it utilizes the rule of thirds with the heron and the whiteness of the Heron helps attract the eye to the subjects.

I chose this image because it utilizes the rule of thirds and a complementary color scheme.

This photo uses the rule of thirds along with a splash of red to add an interesting subject to the photo.

Photo Analysis 10

This is a photo by Sam Abell, It uses perspective to add a unique view to this photo, and has good balance and symmetry using the shape of the canoe to divide the image in half. The life of the trees reflecting on the water, and the skull of the what was once alive deer in the boat add a certain feeling to this image.

Photographer Analysis 9

This is an image by Sam Abell, it utilizes shape and line in order to add interesting subjects to the photo. There are leading lines in the grass which lure the eye to the middle of the image where the umbrellas are, there are not major intersections which really make the composition of this image come together.

Photographer Analysis 8

This is a photo by Mary Ellen Mark. This photo works because of the use of mirrors to reflect and repeat the image of the subject. There are several nice shapes in this image like the round mirror and the two triangles in the back. There is balance in this photo because of use of all areas in the image.

Photographer Analysis 7

This is an image by Brassai. This image has a lot of different values, and has a nice solid S curve along with the parallel tree lines in the back. This photo contains nice texture in the wet looking pavement and bricks.

Photographer Analysis 6

This is a picture by Bert Hardy. It is an excellent photo because it utilizes the rule of thirds in two areas, and the expression on the child face adds some emotional depth, Also there are some nice lines in the legs of both chairs and the tripod of the camera. The subjects are both balanced, and there is some nice contrast in the coat of the panda.

Photographer Analysis 5

Okay, I'm not going to lie and say that I know something about Tim Walker because I don't. However, I believe that this is one of his photographs. The use of colors in this photo (though a little disturbing) leads the eye to all areas of the photo. The use of the same breed of cat was a nice touch, adding the repeating element of the cats face. Also, the pink center cat is the most dominant in this photo because pink is a shade of red, and red attracts the eye.

Photographer Analysis 4

This is a photo by William Eggleston. There is a certain element of harmony in this photo because of the color on the cardboard matching the paint on the car. Everything in this photo has its own space and nothing is too dominant, which creates a nice balance of the subjects in this photo.

Photographer Analysis 3

This is an image by Edward Steichen. I chose this picture because it really show cases the eyes even though they are being covered by the lace they still have enough dominance to show through. There is also a nice use of negative space in the lace around the bottom of the face that adds some balance.

Photographer Analysis 2

This is an image by W. Eugene Smith, this photo shows nice texture in the old wood surrounding the girl, It also uses shape to comply with the rule of thirds, which makes it easier to see the subject, who is also framed nicely by the wood. There is also an element of harmony, with the repeating shapes of the two dolls heads and her head being in the same space of the photo.

Critique: Harmony

I quite like the shape shown in the wings of the butterfly, very clean triangulay shapes. I also enjoy the complementary colors of the flowers in the background that really make the picture pop more.

Photographer Analysis 1

I really can't honestly say that any photographer has seriously influenced my photographs. Probably because I am in photography 1. This is a photo by Irving Penn. I chose it because it shows nice use of space, very prominent shape. As well as the nice repetition in the shapes, the colors used (black and white) have an intense contrast in comparison to one another.

My intent was to satisfy the requirements of the assignment. The message is that cows are gross animals 99% of the time. They are also merciless and kill more people than sharks every year.

I like this photo enough. I think it meets the requirements and I like the values shown. Unfortunately there are some intersections happening in this photo, but I tried my best.

Critique: Splash Of red

Art Vocabulary and Craftsmanship

I  used a lot of digital editing to make this photo have more saturated colors in order to comply with the 'splash of red' assignment.

This photograph contains a lot of intense complementary colors, which really make this photo look decent. Aswell as that, this photo contains a pretty good amount of texture in the water. I may or may not have used photoshop to make the colors more punchy. It also has a feeling of movement because of the ripples in the water.

Critique: (Dramatic Lighting)

Art Vocabulary and Craftsmanship
Describe the technique applied – also describe dodging and burning; depth of field, etc.

I would say that this photo has a short depth of field, given there is no background, I really can't tell. I did not dodge and burn because I can't really see any distracting elements. I used a slow shutter speed to take this photo. In order to get this effect I slightly under exposed it.

There aren't many colors showcased in this image, mostly analogous reds and oranges with her hair and skin tone, and maybe a more pale complementary green on the shirt.  Obviously, there is a lot of emphasis on the face and hands given the fact that they are the only things in this photo.
This photo has a lot of black negative space, but I feel happy with it because it draws more attention to the subject and keeps her out of the center.

My intent with this photo was to complete the dramatic lighting assignment, not a lot of feeling, but if there's any underlying feeling it would be news to me.

I feel as if this photo was successful in the fact that it shows dramatic lighting and completes the task of the assignment.

Critique (Spring Break)

This photo has a great depth of field, and utilizes the rule of thirds. I burned the grass around the fox to eliminate the distracting elements.

I utilized line in this photograph with the old wood on the barn doors, which is also in agreement with the rule of thirds. The color scheme is interesting because it contains the complementary colors between green and red, which really adds interest. There is some nice texture on the old barn, what with the rotting wood and all. This photo also has some nice balance between the fox and the intersecting design on the barn.

My intent was to really just capture this little baby fox without getting mauled to death by it's mother. The color scheme is more muted reds and greens, which takes away from the intensity and adds a more calm mood.

I personally like this image a lot, I feel the subject matter is more interesting  than my usual subject matter, and the printed version is better because the highlights are not as blown out.

Journal Assignment 11

I am pleased with this image that I turned in for the lines assignment. I enjoy the contrast shown through the blacks and the whites, utilizing the darkest and lightest values. The subject is not centered, which I think helps the composition of the photograph.

I chose this photo for lines, its not my favorite, however I do enjoy the flowers and Freckles the cow adding some little touches of red here and there. Freckles is following the rule of thirds, but i dont really like the big white post right on the left side. Its hard to ignore.

Jim Brandenburg Movie

12. One of my favorite images taken in this movie was the one of the wolf playing with the ravens. I personally find this photo appealing because ravens/birds are one of my favorite subjects to draw. As well as that, the image just has a playful energy and shows that nature isn't all death all the time.

13. I'm not 100% sure why he chose to do this project (one photo a day for 90 days) but I think maybe he wanted to really think about each and every photo in its own right, as opposed to oh, this photo is 1/1000 he can say this photo is the only one.

14. Four Jim Brandenburg images.

Journal Assignment 8

I found this photo on the internet. It demonstrates shallow depth of field. The photographer used a very large aperture in order to make this affect on the photograph.
This photo came from the mythical land of the interconnected webs. It demonstrates shallow depth of field by using a large aperture and only focusing on one subject to soften the edges of the more distracting elements of the photograph

This photograph was found on Google. It shows short depth of field because the cats face is sharp, but the body is softer. The photographer used a large aperture to capture this image.

This photo shows great depth of field. The buildings are sharp, the clouds are sharp, everything is sharp no matter what the distance.  The photographer used a very small aperture to make everything sharp.

The next two photos are very similar, the photographer used a small aperature to create great depth.
